Originally dragons were "Wyrms" or "wurms"; flying snakes / serpents. The modern representation we have is not the original.
As they were described the description passed on, people added wings, legs feet because to be flying it has to have wings, right? And a serpent is a type of reptile, and reptiles have legs, right? So now dragons are flying reptiles with wings and legs, breathing fire.
The idea of flying serpents is present in mythology the world over. Even in remote and isolated societies. China have their dragons, South Americans have their winged serpents. Norse mythology has massive world spanning flying serpents.
So what were they then if they were universal? They must have existed right?
Pic related is a recent Russian "flying serpent" breathing fire and bringing thunder.
