There's a stairway that goes all the way from men posting anime characters through men roleplaying as anime characters to men avatarfagging as anime characters and finally wanting to become one of them. I know not everybody falls down the same path, but if you see somebody do something, it's very likely that you'll see other people imitate that person, and so and so forth till it becomes a huge movement. People can always know where to draw the line between what is acceptable and what is not, but for many, there is no option except for either following their group of "friends" or being left behind all alone.
