But did they really NEED to, where they lived? Was there really evolutionary pressure on sub-Saharan Africa to be technologically advanced, when food and game were everywhere and just waiting to be harvested?
However, there sure as shit was pressure on many cultures outside of Africa, especially the (drumroll) Nordics, who lived in inhospitable lands and NEEDED clever solutions simply to continue existing in such harsh environments.
This is not a cultural slam on all of sub-Saharan Africa, BTW, just most of it. The Kingdom of Ife is notable in that its culture produced very advanced bronzes at a time when the rest of Africa was literally running around naked.
