Cold turkey is the easiest way to "scare you straight". Hallucinations, tremors, seizures, intense anxiety, delirium, etc.
Benzo's usually work for acute withdrawal, you usually stay on them for a week or two. If you're a super duper heavy alcoholic, like 30+ beers a day or something then you'll have to stay on benzo's for at least a month then do a slow taper.
