What if Europe had annexed Russia? I would assume Japan would try to annex Sakhalin and the Kurils. Fearing NATO encroachment, China might retake Outer Manchuria to provide a buffer zone between it and the expansionist EU,

Imagine if Europe was an empire stretching from Lisbon to Magadan. From Ireland to Kamchatka.

The EU doesn't "annex" countries, we let countries that want to join themselves, they are totally free and they join if they meet certain criteria after many years of bilateral negotiations. The EU is not an expansionist nor imperialist entity and it doesn't go around "annexing" countries against their will. Please don't go around doing such harmful and bold claims.

but we don't conquer, other countries clamour to be let in and it usually takes them years before they fill the criteria
In fact, for a long time the ONLY foreign policy activity of the EU (not talking about what individual members did on the side) was to accept more members.

And that whole Ukrainian mess might well an opportunity to have Russia become an EU members in our lifetimes instead of in several generations as seemed more likely only a few weeks ago.
