Hmmmm perhaps if showed from the alchemist's perspective? At least the first encounter. Unless of course it's meant to be a surprise...
But i'm also pretty sure that leaving clues tends to be too obvious, so maybe after most things are written you could go back and add stuff that is kinda mentioned later.
Also to some degree this whole idea reminds me of a book about russia where ridiculous situations present rather sad picture of the whole country. Here however it's more of a straight story.
