The stifling pressure of my lungs woke me from my sleep. I clutched my chest breathing heavily though it could be considered a faint wheezing. Although I opened my eyes I saw nothing but total darkness. Confused, I tried to stand up but was prevented from doing so by the weight of my legs, which seemed to no longer belong to me. Panicked, I began to explore my surroundings with my hands, feeling the ground on which I was sitting and the support in the form of a tree. I sighed deeply, thinking about my further actions.
The initial shock subsided slightly and I realised that it was bloody cold. If not for the constant pain in my chest I would have lost consciousness. Being further surrounded by darkness I tried to blink
in the hope that my senses would return, but to no avail. In resignation I leaned my head against a tree and began to massage my legs.
While numbly trying to regain my senses, I heard footsteps behind me. I tried to turn my head but a new shot of pain stopped me. The only thing left was to listen... At first the indistinct sound became clearer and clearer. Apparently unnoticed, I had only a moment to decide whether to call out to this unknown figure.
After a moment's consideration, I decided that my situation was already
in a deplorable state so I could take a chance.
