At first that's what you do yeah, but eventually after you become good enough you can use those kills to draw more expressive shapes. It takes a while though, usually three decades.

Are you at the very least getting better at the fundamentals after a span of time, usually you have to look back after a couple months to see if you get better.
at least that is what I do with my hobbys that are hard like yours.

I'm always blown away with how much technique that artists put into their work, although they may have a person only glance at their work and move on other people like myself will gaze at if for so long trying to figure out the little details and how hard the work is and how much time they must have put into their craft.
artist and people who do this type of stuff blow my mind and always have my respect because of the investment they have put in
I think maybe you should step back for awhile and try to get back into it with a new eye and goals in mind.
