Secondly, it's been known for a long time that gravity bends light to an observer. Earth actually has a rotating gravity well from the back protruding across the rim, which on one hand alternates at the center between "sucking in" and "pushing away" light, for lack of a better word. This results in alternating dark and light periods at the center (which you call the northern hemisphere). On the other hand, because this gravity well protrudes across the rim, it also curves the view of an observer, resulting in what you call the horizon.
