I claimed that they plagiarize stuff from other countries too, which means that they're not really unique. He then retracted his first claim by defending the idea that Japanese people improve upon stuff that they think is defective or that needs a stylistic touch, which is true in certain cases but in others not.
What I can offer instead is the claim that whenever Japanese people believe they've perfected something, they start copying each other off more than they copy other countries off.
Godzilla is obviously inspired by King Kong but also by old youkai legends, and the tokusatsu genre is heavily inspired by American superhero comics, but both of them have had lots of incarnations which follow heavily conventionalized storylines, sets of tropes, characters, etc., inspired not so much by foreign works as much as by previous incarnations of the same genre or even the same franchises.
