not really any special meaning behind it, just my catholic grandma is strong about following tradition to the letter and when I visited her church for a funeral everyone else was that way, and the baptists around central pennsylvania reject the metaphorical interpretation of baptism and most of them are creationists. They won't talk or accept semantics of the bible much, so the extreme cases really could be called pharisees
