They're often portrayed by TV shows as weirdos. Then you have shit like this, shows on TLC about guys paying dozens of thousands of dollars to ex-con women, all the degeneracy and people start to realize the dangers of TV, hey those religious folk were doing this a long time ago.
This shit isn't a first, people now are talking about not masturbating, hey there's a paper that says masturbation is bad, but religious folk have been condemning masturbation for literal millennia.
