I can get to the party, that easy enough, but how do I keep the friends anon? What do normal people like? If all else fails, where do the successful closet degenerates congregate?

Finding a friend worth keeping is the hard part. You won't like 90% of people and 90% people are worthless. But if you want to entertain a group of vapid people that you might find at a party then you just have to be yourself. I have almost no overlap in terms of shared interests with most people and I don't watch TV/movies/do drugs/etc and stay silent for the most part unless I have something to say that is worthwhile. Tact and a moderate level of politeness can get you very far the rest is just how interesting you are to talk to. (Basically your oral storytelling ability.)
Also, always leave the party early.
