I guess do not pick an artbook or tutorial that makes you draw freely, but choose a strict anatomy and figure drawing book with explanations of the artist, like Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist or Figure Drawing: Design and Invention.
And recommend artists instead of Andrew Loomis would be Burne Hogarth, Glenn Vilppu and George B. Bridgman. How you should work with these books and other works of those artists is by reading what they have written next to their drawings and then you copy the drawings with structure. Do not trace, just redraw them by observing and with shapes. They do all over-exaggeration of their drawings to show where the starting points are.
