there's a lot of nice little towns around, xico, naolinco, las vigas, jalcomulco, coatepec, etc. american money goes a very long way, for example 2.2lt of beer costs like 3.2usd
of course there's a lot of other places around, hidalgo or queretaro or chiapas or oaxaca
all pretty safe, pretty nice, no problems with gringos
and well they're all relatively mild climate, puebla is filled with poblanos so... ehh, that's not the best people around, guerrero is pretty but it's a bit harsh, that's where acapulco is, guadalajara and the rest like colima nayarit and further north like sinaloa and chihuahua are harsher but there's more money
east coast north tamaulipas and nuevoleon well, they're nice but kind of weird, I'd still reccomend close to the center, mexico city and it's surroundings are kind of boring but some people like it, estado de mexico tlaxcala and the like, valle de bravo is famous and pretty, or cuernavaca morelos, both have high class mexican city's weekend houses
chiapas has san cristobal and palenque filled with euros, expats, hippies, once you start climbing the peninsula to tabasco quintana roo campeche yucatan people there are a bit peculiar but nice
