What are the political implications of modders for popular games (Skyrim, Minecraft, etc) locking their content behind paywalls like Patreon, and what are the political implications if somebody started releasing "pirated mods", like Fitgirl for Skyrim mods?

Bethesda would descend upon in a cloud of legal molestation because they didn't get there cut. Closest to profit I think you can get is "donations" even "Enderall" on steam is a free mod, still need to try it.
Think Nexus started some shitshow of drama a few years back trying to milk $$$$ somehow with mods, can't remember the details

What I see here is that paywalled mods are already in a legally grey area, i.e. Bethesda doesn't technically care about paywalled mods, but theoretically they could go after mod authors.

I'm more thinking about people pirating mods from community mod authors.

there's actually nothing that can really be done about it.
bethesda can't claim ownership of the mod and strike down the creator. they could, but claiming one mod means they would have to claim all the mods. when there's mods out there that let you fuck kids and animals, there's no way in hell they're going to claim ownership of them all.

it literally has to be a community-drive rebuke. if nobody pays, the creator will just leave with his mod, and someone else can make something similar. this won't happen though, because there's a lot of people out there that lack any capability of foresight and have a lot more money than sense.

if there was a safe site(that didn't get immediately dmca'd, mod authors can sue you redistributing) massively redistributing nexus' entire stock, it would be a real shitstorm. paid stuff would make less of an impact, since it's kinda few and far between.

Off the bat, seems like the top Patreon creator for Skyrim content has 1875 patreons, and mostly releases animations/weapon mods.
