religious organizations in this country have a robust suite of privileges and legal protections and wield tremendous institutional power as well as the immeasurable soft power projected by their legions of devoted followers. literally an unstoppable force. evangelical protestants would converge upon and destroy any politician with the gall to dismiss or delegitimize their goofy apostate religious beliefs
moreover, the establishment has used cults and religious movements to passively manipulate it's subjects right along, throughout the history of this country. for the past 7 years the usual suspects on twitter and youtube have been railing against "new atheism" very aggressively as well as it's downstream ideological descendants and even "edgy" philosophical schools that express anti-christian or particularly anti-calvinist sentiment. materialism and anti-theism are suppressed left right and center. there's a constant stream of anti-nihilist memes despite there being a scant few people willingly expressing such sentiment in public forums. and recently they've even begun to attack buddhists and neopagans for having false beliefs or "being white"
the ruling class is clearly threatened or undermined by nonreligious people in some way
neoliberal ideology clearly relies on magical thinking and superstition
people living in fear of the Christian God make the ideal American subject
those resistant to cults, indoctrination techniques, advertising, etc are a threat
The Culture War™ falls apart when people stop caring about tabloid news and astroturf protests
