They are usually 10 mins long which is a good time span for the public to digest it, like its not a long journey to get the accessible content and they don't have to really invest much. Plus with a mildly interesting topic and good presentation can help out in the long run when you have the publics view in your mind.

here's the answer: base rate fallacy
top 10s are cheap content that is mass produced, no wonder so much of it gets views, but not necessarily a particularly high ratio of it. essays might be more likely to get high view count than top 10s

what makes you say that? if you think about the general public, shorter videos are more watchable then a 30 min essay on some subject.

it's that essays are more unique and high effort which drive people to watch it
also people do not like constantly choosing which video to watch so they are more driven to pick longer videos (to sleep, substitute for radio during commute etc)
youtube shills the fuck out of essays too
