if i were interested in analyzing metaphors and story structure i'd go to the english department and do it with hamlet. looking at those things as tools for learning more about japanese culture or language is fine, but the course has to assume students have 0 literary skills coming in and the japanese professors aren't literature professors, so the class would be an objectively worse version of an intro to literature class offered by the english department since this way adds a language barrier to both the text itself and the professors who are also less specialized
still read it slower than english of course, but it's way faster when i can always figure out the words from context
