Take any time of political turmoil that involves a number of organisations, e.g. time surrounding the October Revolution. They had a lot of different opinions on broad range of issues. Those differences were sometimes minute, sometimes drastic and they could potentially put them all over the compass.
Jjust like that, a dot on a grid has little meaning, little indication why is it there.
Plus it's really "two-dimensional", thinking along the lines of strong state - weak state and economic left - right leaves a lot out of the view.
