They made shoes from leather. And soles from thicker leather. They ornamented them in all kinds of ways and had all kinds of shapes that were individually tailored by a shoe maker. Wooden clogs were a specific cultural thing and I'm pretty sure it was because they were like tap shoes and they used them in some dance.

Also they're work shoes, cloth-based shoes were always common. Asians used soft-sole bamboo shoes (from stringed bamboo, knit like you would a basket) alongside their hard-sole bamboo shoes. Cloth shoes were most common for ages.

Not true. Wooden shoes were the primitive steel stoes. Other folks just wore leather pouches around their feet, sandals, or no shoes at all.

Barefeet = healthiest
Clogs = safe, comfy clean healthy & good atmosphere (winter & summer)
Sneaker = comfy, but unhealthy & bad atmosphere
