its just IRC with jpegs and more corporate, uptight usage terms (i.e centralisation and risk of banning if you dont use the official client.) the fact its easier to get set up than IRC is nice though
if somebody created a protocol with some of the main features of discord (images and voice channels) integrated and supported natively, based on the IRC protocol, that was completely open source, that'd be pretty cool imo
