When you read about how they mistreated them, you can clearly see that slaves, therefore, outside these exceptions, were necessarily treated very well.
Slavery was a way for people to get out of massive debts they couldn't repay and to atone for some crimes already. Slaves were able to earn their freedom by working and typically earned wages.
