the way it always seemed to me was that with bloodline champions they were stumped as to why their really fantastic game was failing to grow. they figured it might be because it was a bit clunky and amateurish since it was their first project, so they made battlerite as an attempt to make the game seem way more presentable and fix a lot of the easy issues.
once again though battlerite was an amazing game with great critical success but a minuscule playerbase, so they probably figured it was just that nobody knew about it which is why they spent so much on marketing. unfortunately getting that massive spike in playerbase made them realize their game was so niche because it was completely lacking in any form of mass appeal so it was always doomed to a very small very dedicated playerbase
as i imagine it they probably panicked at that realization after having already spent so much on the marketing so they tried to bandaid the problem with stuff like battle passes and releasing the battle royale was just the last ditch effort in clawing for a game that could draw in a broader audience, but failed because they were just desperately riding a trend rather than making a decision that was independently strong
the royale doing so terribly likely made them realize that if they wanted to address the issue of mass appeal they were far better off abandoning the spirit of bloodline champions altogether, which is why v rising is the first time they're not using any of their "signature" style thematically or visually despite combat that is borderline identical on a fundamental level. it really seems to have worked out for them fortunately
though i'm just talking out my ass as a long time fan of course, it's not like i actually have special insight into what the devs are thinking.
