Americans do want healthcare and a welfare state but don’t want to pay the taxes to go with it which is why it’s never been enacted. Bernie has never mentioned this. It isn’t just income taxes, it’s extra taxes on their food. Bloomberg enacted soda taxes in liberal New York City and it was insanely controversial despite most of them wanting said healthcare. People are really misinformed about what a welfare state would entail here. The money has to come from somewhere.
