How old are you? I didn't even start trying to get my shit together until I was 25 and had a kid on the way. Ten years on I'm doing just fine, and there were plenty of people older than me when I went back to uni.

Well it's time to start figuring it out man, and I have absolute faith that you can - just look at how many wildly successful total fuckwits there are. If you've got absolutely no idea what you'd like to do I recommend heading to uni, enrolling in a bunch of different courses, and seeing if you have a particular aptitude for or interest in anything.

Oh cool - I can attest first-hand that mixing finance and programming can be really enjoyable (and lucrative). I fell into accounting and have been heading into more commercial analysis roles, mostly self-taught too.

Well I fell into accounting by basically becoming an apprentice to a family friend - hard to crack into without a degree otherwise. Programming I picked up at uni, and not that much of it really - a few CS papers and a whole lot of stats papers. Most of what I actually do I taught myself while trying to make my job easier, but the basic principles of accounting and data management are really important. A word of warning though - a lot of folks are saying accounting will barely exist once automation takes off, and that's why I've been trying to pivot towards ad hoc analysis and model-building.

But billion dollar companies have not been able to automate accounting, only make accountants lives easier. I don't think it's a concern, maybe basic book keeping can be automated but not the work of chartered accountants.

Yeah I suspect a lot of the "it'll be 100% automated in 20 years" people just have no idea how many gray areas and contradictions there are in any given body of tax legislation. Plus there'll always be a need for at least some appropriately knowledgeable people to check over and explain the results of automated systems and fix them when they run awry.
