I tried to learn Russian, but the alphabet was always the reason I stopped. That being said, a lot of Russian words are recognizable by ear if you're already slavic (a simple example: cat in Polish is "Kot", while in Russian it's "кoт", pronounced the same).
Despite the recent uptick of Polish-flagged shills due to the war, Poland is a beautiful country, with hard-nosed, stubborn, but if-you-drink-with-them welcoming people.
An example of such a tradition is "Tłusty Czwartek" ("Fat Thursday"), where you're supposed to eat as much pic related as possible (which is easy, as on the day the scent is everywhere and every 10 meters there's a food stall that sells it).
