>>15399871The issue was never that Catholic priests were molesting children at an extraordinary rate, the issue was that some of these priests were being shielded from the full consequences of their crimes by higher levels of the Catholic church. That sort of things happens from time to time, but there was a higher frequency of incidence and coverups in a particular region over a particular period of time, when this became known it was a massive scandal.
Of course this covering for pedophiles is disgusting, but sadly it is far from unique to Catholics. This sort of defending "the group" right or wrong is actually normal in human society, cover ups in order to protect people involved from consequences happens constantly. Sometimes communities will protect a member from punishment by the outside world but will still punish them within the community, but often this does not happen. It's not so unbelievable, many if not most people would at least consider lying to protect a friend or family member from jail time for certain crimes. Only difference between that and what segments of the Catholic church did is the extent of the lie and the severity of the crime, difference of degree only.
The way these real events involved into some meme of Catholic priests raping a disproportionately large number of kids is retarded nonsense. Statistically, a child is safer alone with a Catholic priest than with a public school teacher.
For reference I am protestant and have no special love for the Catholic church, I have no motivation to make them look less bad than they are or deboonk true accusations against them. Yes Catholicism has issues of corruption which manifest among other things in cover ups like these, no excuse for that. But Catholic priests in general are at worst no more likely to rape a child than the average person, probably less likely if I had to guess given that at least some of them take their vow of chastity seriously and have the discipline to live it out.
