Also what are the best magnets to buy to play with at home with? I want strong, several small pieces magnets. Are the neodymium ones the to go? What price etc

Distilled water by itself isn't magnetic. In fact, water isn't magnetic at all, it's what is inside the water(various minerals) that'd interact with a magnet.

No, distilled water can't be better manipulated, because you're further removing whatever trace metal or elements that might have remotely interacted with the magnet in the first place.

I'm thinking of (try) building something like that fountain with water balls suspended in mid air, but with another effect, maybe sustaining a row of droplets with a strong eletromagnet

Thoughts/advice?

You'd have better luck with any sort of liquid metal. You could do it with mercury but you'd need an extremely strong magnet as it isn't very magnetic and it's extremely poisonous.

Anything magnetic inside water would get pulled out of the water.

I've heard that you can make a tipe of ferrofluid with "Steel splint" (from gg transalte), do you think that's worth looking into

Like seeing which densities are good to mix in the fluid etc

photons are quanta of light; they aren't actually matter. you can trap them using a gravitational field, but you'd need a blackhole for that.

if you wanted to trap light, you could do it much easier, using the concept of total internal reflection. however, it wouldn't look coll because you won't be able to see anything if the light doesn't reach you.
