Idol groups and the like are just a way for Japanese people to escape reality. You may also see them as "cheerleaders" for the average salary(wo)man. It's actually also evident by the lyrics they sing. (basically all comes down to romance or "ganbare")
Male idols are not supposed to be "masculine", they are supposed to look fantastical and "kawaii", just like their female counterparts which can be seen on /jp/. They may be sexualized from time to time, but it has nothing to do with masculinity or femininity per se. (simp money goes kaching haha)
tl;dr: Japanese people just want some stress relief during/after a long day of work.
