In the late Victorian era, a masterful analysis of the bible was compiled by the top English scholars of the Western tradition. This is called the Cambridge Bible Commentary.
These men were quite reverent about Christian values and traditions, although they were completely rational and honest about contradictions and mistakes in the bible. They tended to see the bible as a very important historical document that informed western traditions, although not some infallible book of truth that modern christians, especially americans, tend to believe.
It is EXTREMELY enlightening to read their analysis. These men were scholars who were fluent in the Hebrew language, and studied texts from all of the ancient traditions. Babylonian, Egyptian, Persian, they studied them all, including other jewish texts, and jewish culture generally as it existed in biblical times. Examining the bible through their eyes puts everything into proper context.

Also numerous references to the water that is held in the sky above our heads, such as how god rules "above the waters"
Later in Genesis 7:11, and Genesis 8:2, reference is made to these two bodies of water (above and below). The windows of the sky are opened, and the "great deep" cracks, such that the water the entire world. This is the story of Noah.
The flat earth is actually quite symbolic in Hebrew mythology, and is referenced here:

There is another oddity in Genesis 1. (Besides the fact that the text leaves out "and it was good" on the 2nd day, which appears to be a textual error). God creates "the heavens and the earth" in verse 1. And yet, he creates the firmament in verse 6, and calls it "heaven" (Although the NIV pulls a fast one on us, and changes the translation to "sky"). So isn't that strange, why did god create 2 "heavens"? Or did he create it twice? This sort of thing is the reason why some christian sects believe there are multiple "heavens", possibly as many as 7 of them.
But if we interpret the word "heaven" in verse 1 to mean "waters", suddenly it all makes sense.

There is no mention in the Bible of Jews being Israelites. They claim to be the descendants of the southern tribes that were left in Judea but that doesn't make it true. They took on the identity of Judah after Yahwism was imposed upon them. The word "Jew" is not in the Greek or Latin Bibles.
The English translators used that word when referring to the Judahites because they were under the assumption that they are Judah since they grew up with that lie which is so ingrained in our minds today.

Basically, this book describes moses getting a second set of commandments from god, after the first set is smashed. Except the commandments he is given are completely and wildly different from the first set of commandments.
Christians claim that the speech given by god in this book, where he outlays the commandments, is actually just an extraneous speech that doesn't mean anything. And after this speech, god writes the real commandments as they had been written before.
However, this interpretation of things runs into trouble. Because it explicitly says in the opening that god will write these commandments. And yet, in the ending, it is Moses who ends up writing them down. A clear contradiction.
Although most christian passages dishonestly interpret these verses, the cambridge bible commentary properly recognizes the contradiction, and explains in very exacting detail. This is really impressive, and really lends credence to this bible commentary as the most impressive academic work of its kind.
Although it is a bit outdated, and contains a few references to antiquated concepts. Such as the notion that "vegetable" is the lowest form of life, something that people used to believe in the early 1900's before biological classifications were established.
