When the British found India, the great Indian civilization was already dying. The mughals had conquered large parts of India, and the Maratha empire (which had occupied 90% of India during its peak) was split ino varrious different factions, with the head of the main faction being a drunk weakling. He gave in to British pressure, but the rest of the Maratha empire (along with the rest of India) fought fiercely to defend their personal lands. The British then destroyed these armies, and erected an uncorrupted system in its place.
The British literally rejuvenated India. At that point, the rulers in the various empires were corrupt, dishonest, and generally tyrannical. There was no progress. The British gave India
