Experience mostly. You detect a foreign person with acceptable german skills by them sometimes saying a wrong pronoun.
I don't think that there really is much of a system behind it. It's just experience, and after a while you're usually able to tell by the sound of it.

Just stick to using it as alredy or you will sound weird. Unless you are certain to know of a "saying" (like above) wich uses it.

There is sadly no rule to it except for people. You just have to learn it together with the nouns when studying vocabulary. Most foreigners just constantly spam "die", since it is the most used article.

There's a whole different feminist movement to change the use of gender pronouns/articles in Germany. Grammatical gender and biological sex/gender are not the same in German, but feminists cannot into linguistics because they are stupid.
Grammatical gender is usually determined by either grammatical structure of the word (Mädchen (Girl) is neutral because -chen always is)
or "arbitrary" historical background of the word, afaik mostly when the word comes from a different language without gendered articles.
So basically, you can learn the gender of each common suffix and just pray when you come across a french word.

As a native german, that answer does make sense to me and I oftentimes use it like that too, but the aspect of "already / yet" seems to be completely missing here.
