I've met girls in awful abusive relationships whose families' and friends' all warned them about but the girls themselves constantly made excuses for
it's like seeing a kid play in traffic where you can see the obvious danger while the kid is enthralled; sure you could try to put all the blame on the car that is going to inevitable run the kid over, but you should have prevented it... except in this case it's an adult so you can't actually force them to do as you say.
If one of my friends insists on hanging out with gangbangers and criminals every day and he eventually ends up in the middle of a shoot out then it is absolutely his fault as a functioning adult, as he should have realized the danger he was in. Same deal here.
