https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chafariz_de_El-ReiIt used to be flowing with water all the time, right in the centre of Lisbon close to the river... but the water was better than that of the river coming from a pure hill spring nearby:
>WikiThe King's Spring was the first public water spring in the city of Lisbon, and was built in the XIII century during the reigns of Kings D. Afonso III and D. Dinis, making use of the excellent waters springing from Alfama hill.
The piping of the water from the natural spring to the mouths of the monuments outsice of the old moorish walls dates from 1487, which allowed to provisionment of water for ships sailing towards India to join the Armada of India.
The curent facade dates from 1864, in a neo-classic composition.
The spring had up to nine functioning mouths. Each mouth was exclusive to a racial or social group.
Given the great flow of people and the usual fighting, the use of the spring and its mouths was estabished as follows:
One mouth for the free negros; another one for the moors enslaved on the ships; another for the white females, another for the white men, another one for the female Indians, negroes and slaves.
The King's Spring and its internal hidraulic structures like the reservatory, cistern and water pipes, is classified since 2012 as a Monument of Public Interest.
