But basically, Mormons believe that there is the Old and New testaments, and then a separate testament that was received by Joseph Smith. But they don't worship Joseph like he's some god, just that he was able to receive modern revelation. Otherwise, it's a Christ based religion that, for the most part, shares many similar beliefs with any other Christian religion.
And no, Utah isn't some sort of promised land. it was just where they chose to settle after being persecuted from multiple different states. The English just happened to be receptive of the Mormon gospel or something too.
