Okay, so we have all heard of the theory that New Coke was invented to get people's more interested once the Coca-Cola company brought back Coca-Cola Classic. However, I think there is more to it than just that.
You see, the ingredients of Coca-Cola Classic, the Coke we have today, was not the same as the ingredients of the Coca-Cola that came immediately before New Coke. The Coke we have today contains high fructose corn syrup for its sugar, but before New Coke, Coke was made from cane sugar. The motivation for doing this is obvious -- high fructose corn syrup is far cheaper than cane sugar.
But they had a problem: consumers could taste the difference. They couldn't just change the recipe and expect no one to notice; the demands of the market would force them to switch back.
So instead of directly switching Coke to their new recipe, they introduced New Coke -- specifically with the intent of getting consumers to beg for the original Coke back. The company intentionally showed that this Coke was not the same by adding the word "New!" to every can. They wanted to make it painfully obvious that this was a different recipe. And then, after the backlash that they had predicted, the could switch people over to the high fructose corn syrup Coke. Compared to New Coke, it tasted similar enough to what people remembered, and enough time had passed with New Coke being the only thing on the store shelves that people had forgotten exactly what Coke tasted like. It worked perfectly.
And that's why, even to this day, I exclusively drink Pepsi-Cola.
