You can't buy shit besides shotgun shells unless you have your NJ Firearms Buyers ID.
You need to go to the police station, get a form, fill it out, provide 2 references and they'll get back to you in about 2 months.
One you do that, you need to go get fingerprinted, once they receive the fingerprints it usually takes another month to hear back. Theyll call you to pick up your card in under 4 months once you turn in hopefully.
GET AS MANY PISTOL PERMITS AS POSSIBLE WHILE DOING THIS.
You will have to repeat this entire process for every pistol you want to buy, but you can get permits for 2-3 handguns at a time.
The permits last 30 days but can be extended up to 6 months iirc, then you'll need to do it again if you don't buy a handgun using that permit in that time.
You can't buy "single projectile ammo" without the buyers ID. Only shotgun shells.
NOTE: it is a firearm BUYERS ID. Not an OWNERS ID. You can go out of state, legally buy a long gun and bring it back into NJ as long as the weapon is NJ compliant.
RESTRICTIONS:
"""Assault weapons""". There'a a list of features on their website, your gun can't have more than 2 of a long list. I know two of them are pistol grip and removable magazine. If you get an AR it will need to have the stock fixed and the muzzle device pinned and welded to the barrel. Threaded barrels and adjustable stocks are on the list.
If you somehow manage to get a CCW, you can't carry hollow points. You'll be fined something like $1200 per hollow point in your gun.
