Research other similar stories with similar themes, for example, research witch craft, research some good ARGs, research the occult, etc. Consume as much as you create, build a library. Research. The trick to writing stories, making characters etc is to keep in mind that good artists copy, while great artists steal. It sounds counterintuitive, but you'll spend too much time trying to come up with something "original", you'll end up with something bad OC tier. The wheel is already invented, look up what constitutes good character design. Research.
If you want to do it digitally get a tablet or use a program like Inkscape or Synfig which let's you manipulate splines
