Online friends are more in line with more than a couple of interests or hobbies. Like how me and my boi wife cross on everything except guns. We can work on that and often do. There’s a broader range of things to talk about because my online friends have very similar personalities.
However, my online friend group is very smol and elite where as my IRL friend group is very vast. I got hoes and bros in different area codes all ready to go.

Technically, you can still make friends through playing multiplayer without Discord, Teamspeak, Matrix, etc. But at least you don't have to worry about online friends backstabs.

When I played RuneScape hardcore back in 2007-2012 I had internet friends but now I go online and no one’s ever on.

I live with irl friends but a lot of the irl friends I used to have were shit heads or straight man children that I had to drop because of their stupidity.

No online friends cuz no social media or discord, people i talk to IRL out of obligation more than anything else. i don't really want either though, i used to have lots of online friends but i'm old now and even something like discord or IRC is too much of a pain to bother with.
