It likely did more harm than good though, and we are living with the results of reagan's decision. I also wonder how much of his decision was influenced on groups in the public and private sector who had more nefarious goals for these people, such as the rehab industry, "charity" organizations, and the rumors of the feds inciting the mentally ill to commit crimes for them.
I don't know if we'd be able to restart the asylum system today since americans are far less moral than they were even a decade ago. We're actually seeing a defacto asylum system with the various NGOS and charities attending to the homeless, and hospitals often act as a defacto violent ward since they can't discharge certain patients if no one wants to take them off their hands. I also worry greatly about what is going to happen when the tranny bomb finally goes off and we all these castrated and deeply unwell individuals realize just exactly what society did to them for upvotes.
