Also I don't think there is any reason why you shouldn't use a game engine that makes thing easier. No need to reinvent the wheel a million times. That being said Gamemaker is nonfree so I don't recommend using it. It should also be noted that if you want to change the default behavior in a game engine then it could be a pain in the ass. You're also not going to learn as much, but if the reason you are making a game is to learn something different (for the game you are making), then that seems ok.
