By monetising empathy and making it something to be instilled in management training by E&Y, it ceased to be about an organic experience between humans, and became corrupted into a solipsistic bludgeon from a toolkit designed to reify hierarchical entitlement. You are taught empathy in a certification seminar rolled out by the consultancy, and it becomes something you wield in the taught manner to tick off boxes on your checklist during inherently hostile interactions to deal with disruptions to the idealised flow of business. Everyone recognises they live in a time when the person on the street is to some degree an adversary. Most don't like this but can't grapple with the enormity of necessary remedies, and just wall themselves off at considerable emotional expense. I don't know your subjective experience, but the fact there's embarrassment in the mix suggests you're seeing yourself potentially crying and hating the idea of others seeing you as weak. Sadly this is normal now. This is why the help will remain masked forever. No-one wants to see the corners of their mouths droop.
So friend, you're normal, within the parameters of the new definition of normal. It's also normal to question if mental are starting, because that's an invitation to consume first basic services, then escalate to premium services if you're fully participating in the economy! And then more services. Maybe you want to survive this and see how it plays out. In which case, keep feeling that embarrassment and annoyance. This weak person will be rehabilitated or relegated. Either way, certificated professionals will make that call. They're not your problem.
