I have been fascinated with the king of the wood legend since I read about it in revolt against the modern world. It eventually led me to the golden bough. I ended up finding the full edition on project Gutenberg and its fully annotated I am pretty excited to study this book.

Has anyone had a chance to read any of this book? It seems like quite the accomplishment and I am surprised I haven't heard of it before. I guess the main reason is this makes christ cucks seethe according to wikipedia.

It's one of the most famous books of all time, and is a legend in it's respective academic domain. It's also pre-globohomo, so should be a good read.

I remember paging through it in undergrad, but the full thing is a monster. Almost no one who's not a specialist will have read it. For context, the ABRIDGED edition is 800 pages. The full thing is like 12 volumes.

PRO TIP: If you're interested in comparative mythology, read Mircea Eliade.

Sanctuary of Diana in Italy, legend was that her priest ( Rex Nemorensis) could only be consecrated by murdering the current Rex with a branch from a sacred tree that could only be pulled off by an escaped slave.

Book one, based on the index seems like it will keep me interested. Not sure what the other books look like but the chapters on magic and weather manipulation look interesting kek. I am impressed at how annotated this thing is. It's like he knew how much shit he would get so he overdid it and made sure he backed up all he could.

I read about half of it a few years ago. There's a lot of interesting things in there, but it was kinda hard to read for me as a non-native speaker. Should probably pick it up again, the later chapters also sound very interesting.

Stuff about religion from the 19th and early 20th century can be pretty based. Not sure if this book is based, but late 20th century, the jewish influence was too pronounced and everything becomes about shitting on white people while at the same time claiming equivalence with african tribes that eat poop.

So, I'll check this book out for sure.

According to legend, the cult of Diana Nemorensis was recognized as one of the most ruthless, brutal and mysterious cults of ancient Rome. The high priest who was said to have presided over her rituals was known as the ‘King of the Sacred Grove’ or the ‘King of the Wood,’ or more famously the ‘Rex Nemorensis.’ According to some traditions the cult was populated by fugitives or runaway slaves who had dedicated themselves to the worship of Diana. However, there is little evidence to support this, though the role of the Rex is linked to such outsiders.

Tradition says growing inside the grove was a huge oak tree. It was strictly forbidden for anyone to break a branch off this special tree and it was guarded to prevent this. The only exception to this rule were runaway slaves or fugitives. If one succeeded they were rewarded with the right to challenge the incumbent high-priest to a duel to the death. If the incumbent killed his challenger he remained in his post and lived. If his challenger killed the incumbent he became “the ghastly priest who slew the slayer” – the new Rex Nemorensis – High Priest of Diana, King of the Grove, King of the Wood and Guardian of the Sacred Grove, but it came with a high price.

Having fought for and won the post he had to remain on his guard for the rest of his life. Should a runaway slave, or fugitive, make it to the oak and break a branch off then that slave then earned the right to fight him for his titles and his life as he had done his predecessor. The victor would become the Rex Nemorensis, until he too was defeated, with his conqueror taking his place. There could only ever be only one Rex Nemorensis.

You will also see a copy on the bedstand next to Col. Kurtz in Appocalypse Now.
I was lucky to find the 12 volume set. The abridged version is a good place to start. I highly encourage all Anons to look into it.
