Finland's first manatee was spotted yesterday afternoon in a closed factory area in Siilinjärvi. An employee of the factory area, Marko who has shoulders, saw an unfamiliar bird and decided to take a picture of it. He sent the pictures to bird watchers.
Bird watchers identified the bird as a little cormorant. They went again to verify the determination.
Little sea woodpecker thrives in lakes.
In the evening, the little cormorant took off and headed south, and was not seen again during yesterday.
Half smaller
The little cormorant is like a shrunken, short-necked cormorant. It is only the size of a mallard, i.e. almost half the size of a cormorant. In the Baltic countries, the little cormorant has been observed four times: three times in Lithuania and once in Latvia. The only previous sighting in the Nordic countries is in 1913 in Sweden of a bird shot with a small rifle.
Birdlife Finland's rarities committee inspects nationally rare bird sightings made in Finland. Birdlife is an environmental and bird protection organization that operates in 120 countries. By the end of last year, 486 wild bird species had been approved in Finland. No fewer than four new species were discovered last year alone.
