The cities weren't really a non-industrial society by that point, or at least had an intellectual sphere who by that point progressed past the ideology of monarchism (see the french revolution and the sentiment that spread from there for the enlightenment/awakening i mean)
The peasants had no real investment/education in ideology either way, but were angry at being oppressed, and were looking for any excuse to revolt, which communism gave them
Also, it wasn't the monarchy that the communists overthrew, that was already gone for a few years by then, in a mess of warlord states after a failed republic which was one of the factions, and communists were another

As is the case with all myths like this, it was very likely concocted as further justification of The Mandate of Heaven which is pretty much what gets the Zhou on the throne. This is further evidenced by how the Zhou kinda retconned the Xia actually being overthrown by the Shang when that might not actually be the case.

As a sidenote though I really really like how the Zhou treated the Shang after overthrowing them

Communism wasn't about over throwing anything, it was about piggy backing off the transition from one elite group to the other until all the elites become concentrated enough you could just point them out in the street and mass frustration would tale over.

As I said earlier, Communism already existed in China with Confucius philosophy.

China has the most interesting history of any country. Unfortunately, between WWII, the Chinese Civil War, the Cultural Revolution, and modern development, most of China's historic architecture has been destroyed. The Chinese have a strong fear of ghosts and anything associated with death so they don't want to live in old buildings which as a result end up being demolished rather than preserved. Europe feels more ancient than China does.
