One of the biggest reasons why containing ponies was a thing was to stop the Evil Furry Menace from using ponies as a trojan horse to spread to the entire site. Now furry is effectively allowed everywhere, but ponies are still banned.
It's like that comic with the monkeys and the ladder, their original reasons to ban ponies were completely forgotten long ago, now they simply do it because they believe it's what they're supposed to do.
You could try to discuss this with someone who had a legitimate reason to do it, but you can't argue with mindless fanatics unable to question their motivations.
