James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
Jews definitely believed in and practiced a faith and works based salvation.
Is James talking about salvation or is he talking about how useless your faith is here right now if you do nothing with your works? What kind of testimony do you have if you profess faith in Christ but then go and perpetually indulge in sin. I can understand people questioning the salvation of such.
You see the same message in Matthew 25 with the servant who hid his talent, and again in Matthew 7:23
22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Your works are pleasing to God if you have faith. Lots of people put faith in their works and not God though.
I'm sure there's plenty of saved Christians in the Catholic Church and many lost people in other denominations. You really don't need to look very hard to find examples of apostasy in any church denomination.
Christians fighting over stupid shit is exactly what the enemy wants though.
Mark 3:25
And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
And Paul rebuked the Corinthians for being divided and unkind to fellow Christians.
