yes i read a lot of his stuff when i was a teen. the classics like mountain of madness and color out of space should be mandatory reading but i also liked a lot of his 'lesser' material like the lurking fear or the horror at red hook. i think in order to really appreciate lovecraft you have to either naturally be afraid of everything like he was or at least be able to put yourself in that mindset temporarily. Junji Ito has a similar quality to him. Uzumkai comes off as very silly unless you're the kind of person who also sees evil in seemingly innocuous geometry.
i dunno maybe it's because im a brokebrain schizo and the age when i read lovecraft was when schizo stuff tends to start manifesting if you have it but when i looked at the people in the small decaying southern town i lived in i could see it in their eyes. it was too far inland for them to be fish-frogs but i'm pretty more than a few of them had some troglodyte albino apethings in their family tree. i always felt this palpable aura of corruption and decay over the town, from the carcass of the old steel factory to the thin forests of scraggly trees that always seemed to be losing their leaves regardless of season. there was something wrong there that i can't adequately describe in words and that was lovecraft's whole schtick so i liked him lole

Mhhmmm and what's your favorite story? Other than Horror over Red Hook which is about Arabs moving in and destroying Red Hook with drugs and crime there really isnt overt racism.

Dreams of Unknown Kadath is still my favorite. It's an original Arkham House signed by August Derleth too. I read that and Murgenstrumm as a kid as was hooked.
