Lots of people keep lizards, chinchillas, turtles, etc. and they are decent pets, especially lizards. Animals that need to be handled in large numbers without as much training need to be domesticated, in order to keep their stress level low and make them willing to accept food and general human interference.
Pets get a lot more personal attention and generally need special training even if they're domesticated. Domestic rabbits are great to keep for food and furs, but terrible as pets without training. Snakes and lizards are useless as a food source, but are great as pets because they like your heat and are rarely aggressive even without training.
